Game developer and Steam game storefront operator Valve has just introduced the Steam Deck, a portable gaming console that can play games from your Steam library. The handheld system, closely resembles the Nintendo Switch, but packs some beefier tech specs. The Steam Deck is available for pre-order beginning on July 16, 2021 and is scheduled to release in December of this year!
The Steam Deck features a 7″ touchscreen, trackpads, Fast storage, Hi-Fi audio, a 40Wh battery, Expandable I/O and microSD storage, Wi-Fi, and Fast Suspend / Resume functionality. The Steam Deck can also be connected to external monitors and TVs, or used in dock mode (sold separately), similar to the Nintendo Switch. Most importantly, the system will also allow you to install and use PC software, browse the web, watch streaming video, and, install other PC game stores besides Steam!
The Steam Deck comes with a brand new SteamOS software, different than the desktop PC version, designed and optimized for a handheld gaming experience. All of the Steam features you’d expect are supported, including Steam Chat, Notifications, Cloud Saves, Remote Play, and Steam Store access.
